Getting worse - 1/31/2013
Ive lived on long island ny my whole life ( 48 years). Moved 10 different times.Bought a house in huntington 15 years ago. As my taxes go up..on avg. of $300 a year. The neighborhood is turning for the worst, more rentals and more immigration issues. The town is trying to pretty it up with new sidewalks and flower planters. But the problem is the changing community. I don't have to drive too far to get me shaking my head with disappointment and raising my blood pressure. When there are rentals, people don't cut there lawns or take care of the simplest of house maintanance. My frustration will force me to leave my friends and family in 5 years. Long island is nice.....if you can afford to live in the wealthier parts of it. Avg taxes are now 10-12k. 15-20k for nicer parts of town. Not sure how the younger generation will be able to have what our parents had :

If I could afford Long Island Living, I'd never

Home for 27 years - 7/15/2009
I was born and raised in the Dix Hills section of Huntington Station, New York. I feel like I had a priviledged childhood. Crime is low, education is high, culture/nightlife is high, etc. However, the cost of living is unbearable. I cannot afford to buy a similar home (1 acre=$800k+9k taxes eck) in this neighborhood or really anywhere close to it. A $400k starter home, no land, and high taxes is not my idea of a good
